Boosting smart innovation in remote regions for all of Europe

Highlands and Islands European Partnership | Remote and northern sparsely populated areas

Highlands and Islands European Partnership is involved during the European Week of Regions and Cities in a regional partnership with Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian regions, entitled "Remote and northern sparsely populated areas".

The event demonstrated the common ground for how to set up innovation and regional development in remote, less urban areas, considering the unique potentials and assets of the European Arctic and north Atlantic regions, as global front-runners, but in many ways at the start of a systematic coordinated approach, in which the EU is vital.

Speakers from the OECD, Nordregio and EU, together with regional stakeholders and researchers, presented how to foster smart specialisation strategies in sparsely-populated areas, with examples of Arctic cluster-based innovation interlinking research, industry and the public sector, and cross-border cooperation in northernmost Europe and across the EU.

Scotland was represented by Donna Chisholm, Regional Head of Sectors, Innovation and Programmes at Highlands and Islands Enterprise, who spoke at the event.
