Glasgow and Berlin are proud hosts of the inaugural European Championships 2018 – a new multi-sport event taking place in August 2018 that will bring together Europe’s leading sports including the current European Champions for athletics, aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon, as well as a golf team championship.
To mark the event, Scotland House Brussels and Berlin’s Liaison Office to the EU would like to invite you to a joint policy seminar on the legacy of sporting and cultural events in Europe, their economic and social benefits and the importance of boosting their competitiveness in the global marketplace. The event will be hosted by Ministers Fiona Hyslop, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, and Aleksander Dzembritzki, State Secretary for Sport, Senate Department for the Interior and Sport Berlin.
Speakers will include representatives from the Scottish Government, the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport Berlin, the European Championships Management, Glasgow Life, the European University Sports Association, the Organising Committee of the 10th World Games in Wrocław 2017, the European Broadcasting Union and the European Commission. Discussions will draw on examples of past sporting events such as the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 and the World Cup 2006 hosted in Germany and look ahead to the benefits the European Championships 2018 are expected to bring. The seminar will analyse the challenges and opportunities for developing new formats of major events and explore how this could be supported at an EU-level.
The policy seminar will be followed by a concert highlighting the cultural programmes accompanying the games – the Glasgow European Championships Festival 2018 and the European Mile in Berlin. The concert will feature talented students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Berlin’s Universität der Künste. After the concert, guests will be invited to a networking reception featuring a fusion of Scottish and Berlin culinary specialties.
We would be delighted if you could join us. To register for the events, please RSVP by Thursday 17 May to firstname.lastname@example.org indicating whether you plan to attend the Policy Seminar and/or the Concert and Reception.
